Predators honour war veteran
Sun Nov 11, 2007
By:
By Jason Chamberlain
A hometown hero has
returned to Port Hope.
Bombadier Josh Briand, 27, returned to Canada in August after a
seven month tour of artillery duty in Afghanistan. He also spent
over a month in Sri Lanka as part of a disaster assistance
response team. Though he is currently based at CFB Petawawa, he
returned to a few of his old stomping grounds on Friday,
speaking at Port Hope High School (he is a graduate of PHHS) as
well as Dr. Hawkins Senior Public School before heading to the
Jack Burger Sports Complex to drop the puck at the Preds game.
Bombadier Briand served as equipment manager for the team when
they were known as the Buzzards.
“I’m just glad I didn’t fall,” he joked, about his trip onto the
ice to drop the puck.
He looks back fondly on his years playing minor hockey in Port
Hope and working for the Buzzards. “It was a good experience for
myself. They let me practice with them. That made me a better
hockey player.”
It hasn’t taken him long to reconnect with the sport since his
return home; he’s now playing on three different teams. But it
was his efforts (and the efforts of all Canadian troops) in
Afghanistan that inspired the Predators faithful to give him a
stirring welcome on Friday night. He received similar welcomes
from students earlier in the day, and he was happy to speak to
them about his experience.
“There were bad times, and sad times,” he said of his time
overseas. “I love Canada, especially now that I’ve fought for
the country. You get a new respect for the country we live in.”
He tried to share that new perspective during his speeches. “We
take little things for granted, like hockey on Friday nights,
education. Warmth.”
Bombadier Briand was honoured to be recognized at the game on
behalf of his fellow troops and felt the need to provide Preds
fans and the local students with the perspective of someone who
has been overseas, in the middle of the conflict.
“They hear a lot, but they don’t see someone who has actually
been there to talk about it. They need to know we are doing a
good thing over there.”
Bombadier Briand pointed out efforts like providing electricity
to the country and ensuring little girls receive education as
efforts that the media does not often cover.
“They see soldiers dying and they think it’s for nothing, but
it’s actually for something.”
Bombadier Briand has been in the miitary for seven years and is
now considered a veteran. He is slated to return to overseas
duty in 2010.
