Predators add new head coach
Press Release: June 1, 2006
By: Predators
Administration
The 2006 - 2007 OPJHL season will be a very interesting time for
the Eastern Division finalist with as few as 3 or 4 roster
players returning this coming season. The Predators have started
making plans to reload and retool the entire organization after
what many consider to be a disappointing finish late last
season.
"We believe that we have added a Head Coach
this season that is second to none for this level of play while
giving our organization a feeling that we can accomplish even
bigger goals for both the hockey club and our players" stated a
confident Predators 3rd year returning Director of Hockey, Tim
Clayden "Coach Bart Crashley has the resume and the experience
to guide a junior A hockey team to be the very best that they
can possibly be, on and off the ice. Now we need to go out and
find the 13 junior A hockey players that want to play for the
right reasons and find the five or six key 20 year old high end
players that have the personal goals to push themselves to come
in here and lead our younger players by example every day,
complimenting a younger and supporting cast that also wants to
work their own tails off each and every shift in order to
achieve their own goals, on and off the ice”
“I personally fumbled the
biscuit last season and frankly didn’t have enough faith in a
younger hockey team to get the job done, I was wrong and it will
not happen again, this season we will definitely be younger and
have a lot more speed" added Clayden
Predators Co-Governor Rod Finney added "although we were the
Eastern Division finalists last season, all things considered we
had a pretty successful year, especially if you combine the past
2 seasons where our hockey club has accumulated the most points
of all OPJHL teams and helped to promote at least 7 players on
to a higher level of play. The end result could have been
better, but it is just as equally satisfying when you can see
that the organization has contributed to the promotion of
Predator players to a higher level of education and play through
junior A hockey in Port Hope”
The past two seasons the
Predators have helped move on;
2004 - 2005
Steve Hynes:
Huntsville Havoc, Pro
Tyler Cann: Elmira College, NCAA
2005 - 2006
Jason Fransky: Elimra College, NCAA
Rusty Masters: Elmira College, NCAA
Tyler Allen: St. Norbert University, NCAA
Michael Grimes: Potsdam University, NCAA
Kyle Gunn Taylor: Buffalo State University, NCAA
“The Elmira College NCAA hockey program is very excited to learn
that two Port Hope Predators this season have decided to attend
Elmira College this fall. Both Jason Fransky and Rusty Masters
will fit in well with our organization and bring some needed
offensive abilities to our Soaring Eagle program. We would like
to thank all of those in the Predators organization for their
assistance throughout the process. The Predators have done a
great job of promoting their players, developing their skills
and worked closely with us throughout the recruiting process.
These two young men are very mature, focused individuals that
are truly excited to join our program. We look forward to having
them don the Purple and Gold next season” said Elmira College
Head Coach Tim Ceglarski
The Port Hope Predators have tremendous possibilities again this
season with a strong, supporting ownership that believes in both
the Town of Port Hope and their hockey club, giving the
community junior A hockey fans ownership they can count on each
season.
Ownership that is provided by
local resident Mr. Sandy Smith and his business partner Mr. Rod
Finney that is as stable as any team throughout the entire
Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League. The hockey club is
also lucky enough to have a strong following of local fans and
tireless, enthusiastic volunteers that graciously continue to
support the team each season. Port Hope Mayor Rick Austin and
Town Council have also expressed their wish through their own
efforts to help ensure a junior A franchise remains welcomed and
operating in the Town of Port Hope, season after season. “It is
great to be a part of Port Hope Predators junior A hockey”
exclaimed the newly appointed Predators bench boss, Head Coach
Bart Crashley
“It is mind boggling that a Head Coach of Bart Crashley's
experience is even available at this level. Bart is well
respected at all levels of play, both here in North America as
well as Europe. Coach Crashley brings a wealth of experience to
the Port Hope Predators organization as well as a great deal of
maturity and knowledge of the game" said Co-Governor Sandy Smith
"the Predators organization is incredibly fortunate to be able
to add a coach of Mr. Crashley’s stature and experience to our
junior hockey program. Mr. Crashley will be both an asset within
our community and behind the Predators bench where we are
confident Bart will bring out the very best in each of our
players”
Coach Crashley stated “in late
spring I met many of the volunteers at a Pete's playoff game and
was truly overwhelmed by the number of people and their
enthusiasm for the upcoming season. Often the coaching staff,
management and players are the only ones working at this time of
year getting prepared for the next season. Not so with Port
Hope. Everyone I met is busy preparing and working at getting
ready for what we all hope is a very successful and entertaining
season. I got a real feeling of commitment from everyone and
that is special. My first impression of Port Hope is really
exciting" added Coach Crashley "success is a team game and it
takes all involved on and off the ice working together as a team
in order to be successful”
The Predators have also retooled
their management structure by rehiring the interim GM of last
season, John MacArthur is this season’s GM and local sports icon
Ian Green has also been added to the Predators management team
as Assistant GM this year. Both Associate coach’s last season,
Brendan O’Grady and GM John MacArthur will assist Head Coach
Crashley with day to day coaching duties throughout 2006 - 2007.
“John moved into Port Hope
mid-season last year to help us out during a very difficult time
and has earned his position as the General Manager of the hockey
club. He comes to the rink everyday with a big smile and has an
excellent rapport with the players which played an important
role in our final decision. John's day to day positive enthusiam
is a breath of fresh air for our hockey club.” said Clayden “Ian
Green has been a supporter of the Port Hope Predators
organization forever and brings so much more to the organization
than just providing stats each game. It became obvious last
season that the hockey club required local supervision and the
management team of Ian Green and John MacArthur gives our
organization hands on local management that is well recognized
throughout the community and one that can provide local
knowledge and positive support for our players and their parents
too”
Coach Crashley added "junior A hockey now is really more of a
development league than ever before, the opportunities for
players to continue on playing at higher levels have never been
greater where players today keenly look toward the future
advancement of their own careers after junior hockey. It is up
to us as a coaching staff and management to remind our players
all season of what other great opportunities there maybe out
there for them if they are willing to work hard and be a good
citizen everyday. Winning is really just the result of
developing players and creating a team from individuals that are
dedicated to working together while complimenting one another"
"I really have no interest in
just exploiting a teenager's hockey talent, I prefer to develop
the person as well as the hockey player” said Coach Crashley
“Hockey changed for me when I went to Europe in 1978. After only
seeing and playing junior & professional North American Hockey,
I was shocked. There really is another approach to this great
game .. maybe not better but certainly combining Canadian and
European hockey really does take the game to a higher level of
play. Hockey without our "Canadian Passion" is not very
interesting, but if we can improve the skills and keep the
passion, our game will no doubt be better” explained Crashley
“ We will be working very hard this season at improving our
speed, skills and teamwork. I think the fans of Port Hope will
see a difference and like it too" said Coach Crashley
enthusiastically. "My commitment each year has really been to
the player himself, while wins and banners in the rink are nice,
the greatest reward is looking at the back of the game program
where you can find a list of your past players and where they
have gone. There we see the players that we have helped move on
in both hockey and in life. We look forward to providing Port
Hope with some very entertaining junior hockey this season while
the Predators play Canadian on defense and Russian on offense,
it doesn't get any better" added newly appointed Predators Head
Coach Bart Crashley
"With hockey in Port Hope we not only get a chance to develop
kids as players but as people too. Hockey really is a great
game"
