Prentice tries to be The Last
Man Standing
Press Release: June 1, 2006
By: Vince Versace
Former Oshawa General Mark Prentice will see
if he has what it takes to be the last man skating in the hockey
reality show 'Making the Cut-The Last Man Standing'. "I am just
really grateful for the break to participate in 'Making The Cut'
this season as it gives me an added opportunity to showcase my
abilities to the pro scouts," says Prentice, who finished his
junior career with the Port Hope Predators last season.
Prentice is one of 39 players who will be featured on the show,
which starts Sept. 9. He led the Provincial Junior A Hockey
League with 56 goals and 100 points in 49 games for the
Predators. Filming of the show begins this weekend in British
Columbia and ends in early August.
Shelley Prentice says her son is excited about the opportunity
and exposure the show will give him. Prentice was chosen from a
list of 300 top junior and university players provided to the
show's producers from the National Hockey League.
"When Mark first got the call he thought someone was trying to
pull a prank on him," says Mrs. Prentice. This is the second
season of Making the Cut-Last Man Standing which gives
non-professional, undrafted hockey players a chance at being
drafted by NHL team. Six Canadian NHL teams drafted six players
last year at the show's season finale. The show's producers are
excited about Prentice getting a chance to participate in the
show.
"Mark had an exceptional season with the Port Hope Predators and
our scouts felt that he deserved this second chance to make a
first impression," says Scotty McWilliam, the show's hockey
development director. "We are all excited to see how his talent
shows when playing next to top major junior and university
players from across Canada."
Tim Clayden, Predators hockey operation director, says Predator
ownership and management are excited about the new opportunity
granted to the team's former captain and all-star.
"We are all very happy for Mark, he deserves the bonus and has
an excellent chance to continue on with his own hockey career,"
says Clayden. "Although Mark was the leading scorer last season,
he has a better chance than most to continue on in hockey. He
can play well in both ends of the rink which is most important
in today's new game."
'Making the Cut-Last Man Standing' starts Sept. 9 on Global and
will run every Sunday until its conclusion in the new year.
